Detailed Description
HC-ES26 - Fruit Bat. Blumer’s Fruit Bat: These large fruit bats are called flying foxes and are natives of New Guinea. They can be up to 16 inches long, weight over two pounds and have a wing span of 6 feet. Fortunately, these bats eat only fruit and overripe fruit at that. They often eat unharvested fruit and therefore eliminate breeding grounds for harmful fruit flies. Flying foxes have large eyes because they depend on sight rather than echo location as do most other bat species. Their greatest threat is habitat encroachment by humans.
