HC-ES04 - Manatee. Incredibly, it is believed that many stories or sightings of mermaids can be attributed to the curious-looking manatee. They have paddle-like forearms, hairy creased faces, hairless skin and weigh over 1500 lbs. Oddly, their closest relative may be the elephant. Manatees are actually quite endearing and their inquisitive nature often brings them in close conflict with man. Alligators and man are their only enemies. They are not protected by law in many places, but the increasingly widespread use of power boats has disturbed their sensitive habitat.
